How are is ativan?

My doctor prescribed 1 mg of ativan a day for my anxiety and sudden insomnia. How safe is this and for how long should I take it. I'm scared of side effects, addiction, and withdrawel symptoms. I read that this is not a drug to stop taking abruptly. I've taken just one and it did help me sleep, if i stop after one will be alright or should I continue?

2 weeks of regular use will result in physical dependence. There are much safer medications to take for anxiety and insomnia such as a low dose of an antipsychotic such as Quetiapine [I've been on and off it for over 12 years and it's great for both anxiety and insomnia long term], a sedating antihistamine such as promethazine [25mg knocks me out and wipes out my anxiety] or a low dose of a sedating antidepressant such as Trazodone, Amitriptyline, Mirtazapine etc which are all licensed for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety and they work really well.

Ativan is good to have in the house if you experience a panic attack and need to urgently treat it but benzodiazepines should not be prescribed for regular use. Your doctor is guaranteeing you go back to him for years to come as you will be dependent on it within 2 weeks and you will need higher and higher doses to get the same effect as you'll soon need to take just to fel normal and stop withdrawal symptoms. I used to be dependent on another benzodiazepine, diazepam, which I was prescribed 3 times a day as a muscle relaxant. The withdrawal symptoms lasted months when I tried to come off it and lead to a suicide attempt, they were so bad.

It should not be taken for more than 1-2 weeks. Benzodiazepines are very addictive controlled substances. They are hard to get off of once addicted.

The thing about not stopping abruptly only applies after you've been taking it for a while.

Keep taking it as long as it helps you. It’s good medicine.

Going off of a psych medication without the supervision of a doctor or a mental health professional is always a very bad idea. The withdrawal effects are nasty and can go on for weeks.

Be happy you have found something that works, and keep taking it until you and your doctor agree to start weaning you off it. I have been on some form of psych meds for decades and I need them every day.
