Continue questioning. You've found a loose thread at the hem of the fabric of Christianity. If you continue pulling, I think you'll find that the entire thing will unravel in your hands.

Jesus and his apostles were Jews, and they and St. Paul tried to make the Christ into the Messiah prophesied in the Old Testament. Emperor Constantine, prodded by these Jewish followers, codified the Hebrew scripture as part of the Christian Bible. If you step back and look at the central themes of each section, the OT is full of divergence, jealousy, retribution and unprincipled conflict with other tribes. Interesting fable or history, but not consistent with the God of the New Testament.

The four gospels portray Christ as a pacifist who healed the sick, calmed the troubled, accepted prostitutes and outlaws as having value, and who fought against the tyranny of the Roman state.

Perhaps Constantine and the Counsel of Nicaea errored in including The Old Testament in the Christian Bible, and I personally question of the inclusion of the writings of Paul and the book of Revelation being a part of Christian theology.

If I read the gospels right, Christianity is a religion of peace, forgiveness, love, inclusion and understanding. That is, I believe, enough to let we of this planet, to live peacefully and productively among each other.
