Do i have to bring a gift?
so we are invited to a friends bd-party at their place tomorrow evening.
in the invite, all the guests were asked to bring something to drink or a sweet/savoury snack.
Now: Am i expected to bring a gift aswell? Or will a bottle of fine wine or a homemade cake do the job?
ps most of the guests&the host are in our midtwenties, the host is amongst the ones with a pretty well paid job!

In my opinion, asking guests to bring the refreshments is boorish and rude. If I were you, I would bring ONE can of soda (for myself), one SMALL bag of snacks (again, for myself), and a gift for the birthday honoree.

Bring a small, inexpensive but useful gift, such as a nice deck of cards, as well as your snack or food contribution. In addition, a "Happy Birthday" card would be nice. Dollar stores usually have decent cards and gift wrap stuff.
Your little present really should be gift wrapped. If others are producing gifts in addition to their foods and snacks, you can too. Otherwise you can keep it in your pocket.

A homemade cake will be more than fine. It will serve both as a sweet food she asked
for and a nice gift as well.

Wine and a snack. That's it... If you want to make it interesting bring a board game or some cards.

Just bring the drink or snack. That is good enough.

I'd say your gift is paying for the party, since the guests are providing all the food and drink.
IMO, it's kind of weird, but whatever.
However, if you worry that you'll seem weird if you don't have a gift, too, buy something small--literally small as well as inexpensive--and give it if you see others bearing gifts. Or consider hitting a thrift shop for a pretty glass or ceramic plate or serving dish (they often have lots of those, including silverplate items) and taking your food item on it, leaving it behind as a gift.
