I'm not working at the moment so 'through work' is not an option. I do have money to spend and am willing to use it. Any ideas please.

meetup.com. A social website where people in communities get together to share like interests. It's free to register and look around to see what's going on where you live.
i've enjoyed several hiking groups, an art group and i have also done a few after work for appetizers or a drink groups (people my age).
most groups are free of charge, but obviously you'd have to pay for your own food, or fees, etc.
it's worth a try! i've made a couple of new friends.
