Because we don't call them HOT CATS.

References to dachshund sausages and ultimately hot dogs can be traced to German immigrants in the 1800s. These immigrants brought not only sausages to America, but dachshund dogs. The name most likely began as a joke about the Germans' small, long, thin dogs.

It's NOT what you think. (lol).
They are named after 'wiener dogs' also known as Dachshunds; a term which actually started with the shape and length of linked sausages resembling the long body of that particular breed of dog, (a joke observation made by butchers and meat vendors), and then afterwards the 'wieners' which they started to serve individually on buns to drum up business for the linked sausages. They were altered over time and became more popular than the linked sausage and were served at baseball games. The rest is history.
At no point were canines used as meat, though originally, they tried combinations of all sorts of ground and pressed meat until they arrived at the classic flavor people liked the most. They are traditionally either beef, (made to be kosher food), or a combination of beef and pork meats, (when not made to be kosher).

"The term dog has been used as a synonym for sausage since the 1800s, with one thought being that it came from accusations that sausage makers used dog meat, starting in at least 1845. In the early 20th century, consumption of dog meat in Germany was common. The suspicion that sausages contained dog meat was "occasionally justified"." (Wikipedia)
