Did I get the job?

A week ago I walked into a fast food joint and asked if they were hiring. The manager said they were, and told me to fill out the online application. I went home and filled it out. I visited the restaurant again two days ago and told the manager i just wanted to check up on the status of my app. He asked for my name and then told me that as soon as he got someone to cover him, he'd take a look at my app and send me vial email a link so that i could fill out some documents. Eventually he did send them to me and i filled out some documents regarding myself, my salary/w4, taxes, and i had to read multiple terms of services about safety and sexual harassment. I told the manager i finished and then he asked me if i had my work permit application with me (I'm 17). i told him i did and i gave it to him to fill out. After that, an angry customer asked for him and he forgot all about me so I left. Do I technically have the job? What steps should I take after this? Why didn't I get interviewed? I was thinking i should give my school my work permit application, wait till they give me my actual work permit and then go back to the manager and give it to him. Thank you

I think you did get the job and that you were interviewed, it just wasn't a regular interview. Your initiative to seek the job likely proved everything he needed to know about you to hire you. So, don't stop now. keep following up, but do so at the right time. The restaurant isn't busy at 4 PM so follow up then.

It sounds/reads like you never should have left when the manager had to handle an angry customer. Show up there again, hopefully with the work permit, and all should be fine, though he might want to hear just why you left like you did.

when he has time and before he needs the person he is going to hire, you will get an email from him or maybe a phone call if he is going to hire you

Sorry but we wouldn't know. You need to call up there and ask for that particular manager so you can ask them.

Until you have hours to work you don't really have a job. Sounds like you will get a job though. Anyway I don't think places do interviews anymore, I think the online application does most of what interviews did in cases like fast food. Yeah if you were going to be trying to be a CEO or white collar job they would likely still vet you(think of that like an interview process). Now I haven't tried to get a job in a long time(I have one) so I'm not sure how much changed with online, it just seems like what I've read online most of the type of stuff they did in interviews is probably covered through the new applications online.

If you are not invited to interview, you have not been successful.
