Your first car should be cheap, simple, reliable, not sporty. That means a used Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, maybe 10 years old, or something like that. A Scion would be okay, or a Nissan Sentra.
If you need to carry more than four people, then an Accord or a Camry.

With no more information than you have provided, I suggest a Honda Civic, for a lot of good reasons -- reliability, cost, availability of parts, cost of insurance, etc.
