"When do you think self driving cars will be 50 percent of the cars on the road?"
Given that self-driving cars have been around for over 50 years and there's STILL only a handful on the road, and that handful is STILL unreliable and unsafe, not for many, many decades.

Current proposed legislation in the US allows carmakers to produce up to 100,000 self-driving cars per year "as long as they could demonstrate the vehicles are at least as safe as current vehicles with human controls." (first source) So, if they ever get good enough to be on the roads (if you saw the video of the Uber car that mowed down the pedestrian without flinching or slowing, you must have reservations) the roughly 15 automakers selling cars in the US could sell up to 1.5 million cars per year when they hit their stride. With 263 million cars registered now, 133 million of those would have to be displaced. It could happen in as little as a ninety years if the self-driving cars lasted forever. If they last less than 100 years on average they could never reach the 50% mark under current proposed regulations.
However, since virtually nobody wants one at any price (see the second and third sources), I think the future is very dark indeed.

That is gonna be a while, only about 118,000 bugs to work out of the system, and not even tested in application yet. Seems Oregon will get that honor, Yield to self driving cars signs are turning up.
Consider, there are not even 50% electric cars on the road yet.
