Adding on to an existing ceramic piece?

If I bought a plain white ceramic teapot, would it be possible for me to sand off the existing glaze, add clay to give it some 3D embellishments, fire it in a kiln, then add a new painted glaze by painting it and firing it again?

    No.

While you could put a different glaze on, you are not going to add clay to it and have it stick. The problem is that the clay will shrink significantly when it is fired. So if it fits the curvature of the teapot before it is fired, it's probably not going to fit after it is fired. The only way to stick it on would be through the glaze which means while the glaze is liquid it's not going to stay in place but slide/fall off.

Besides all that would be a lot more work than simply making a new teapot.
