Married will result in less withholding, but you CAN'T legally file as married ir your spouse files a separate return.

In ANY case, the PROPER way to fill out your W-4 is to determine your actual tax liability, and then figure out what will most closely match your withholding to that amount. The IRS has a withholding calculator to help you with that.

'Married' will result in less being taken out.

    "Married" will take less.

("Married but withhold at higher single rate" would take more.)

Married (but if you file separately, you don't want to withhold at the lower married rate). You could go to 1 probably as well, the lower the number, the more they withhold.

Filing separately is the absolute worst way to file.

"Married" will take less out of your paycheck but will result in you owing a fairly significant amount at tax time. This status assumes that you are married and your spouse does not work.

"Married but withhold at the single rate" is the correct status for your situation.

Claiming 0 allowances results in the highest withholding rate for the status chosen, so if you want less money withheld, you could claim more allowances.

If you want less taken out of your paycheck, you need to put 1 (for yourself) on Line 5 (for allowances) and check mark married. The married rate is less than the single rate. That means your checks will be more but your refund at filing time will be less.

Married but withhold at the higher single rate will take out more. If you put just "married" you will most likely end up owing a lot when you file next year.
