Friend refuses to return borrowed item should i contact the police? Or sue?

I let my Friend borrow an item (cost over $800 in store, and is priceless in my eyes) his borrowed it for 4 1/2 months and refuses to give it back. I only let him borrow it because he was a friend that I trusted. In march he broke the item and repaired it behind my back. But once I told him I needed the item back. He said pay the 150 dollars for the repair first! I did not tell him to fix it and he broke it! He refuses to give it back or let me enter his house? Should I call the police or go to court? I prefer fastest way to achieve said item over most money gained

    December 2017

-I let my friend borrow my item

    January 2018

-I tell friend that I'm building another item and if I'm finished building this other item by April 2018 then he might as well have the original borrowed item

    February 2018

-Friend informs me that he has accidently broke my borrowed item, I inform him that its okay and that he can return the item to me and I will fix it free of charge

    March 2018

-My friend claims he heard a rumor that i have finish building the item (which is a lie)

-My friend did not contact me to insure that the information he heard was true

-My friend believes the item is now his property so he paid a repair shop to fix my item ($150)

-I lost the ability to finish building my item (no job=no funds)

-I contact my friend to tell him the "deal" was off and he wouldn't be able to keep the item in April 2018

-I kind of feel bad that he repaired the item for $150 so I told him he can borrow it until April 1st, 2018

    April 2018

-April 1st I told my friend he can hold on to it untill April 20th but he must makes sure that I acquire said item no bull.

-April 20th Friend ignores messages, phone calls, hides from me in public ect. Evades me untill I caught him on the April 23rd

-Friend refuses to let me enter his house and get my item and insists that I either pay him $150 for the repairs when he broke it or sue him!

I don't have a lot of physical proof aside form some messages, can I contact the police I know he has the item inside his house? I want this to get sorted out as soon as possible, I don't have the patience for small claims court.
