Was US involvement in the Vietnam War necessary? Why or why not?

Our involvement in Vietnam was ostensibly to combat the spread of communism. This may be partially true, but the real reason was to send more money to the military-industrial complex.

If it hadn't been for ridiculous rules of engagement and complete lack of a strategic plan, the US could have rolled right over the North Vietnamese.

Necessary in what way? Generally, since we ended up losing and lots of folks on both sides died or were injured, and we did not end up getting any of our strategic desires filled, no.

Defeat the commies, convert the country to a Democracy, colonize Viet Nam and pat ourselves on the back for owning yet another piece of the earth.

I think in many ways the US was lumbered with the impossible task of keeping

Word peace after the second World war. In hind site we can all be wiser but

times were different then and after the unprovoked attack on Pear Harbour it set the scene for mistrust and fear of attack or expansion of wars in inflamed areas

    of the World.

It was the wrong war, in the wrong place and at the wrong time. Did the Americans know the Geography and the Jungle? No. Did they know the people and their customs? No Did they speak the language? No

What on earth did they think they were doing?

Asking Americans teaches you nothing its the same as asking Nazis if the holocaust was necessary its the same dogma this is not an insult its the truth no one got involved in the American Civil war did they to help one side that is what it was Vietnam is a thriving country today same people so is America

    No

Partly because we lost that battle, and we should have known because we lost the Korean war earlier too.

I may be biased. If you watched the TV series "The Wonder Years," they just plain nailed the feeling from my cohort of kids: we watched older brothers or older brothers of friends go off to war and not come back, and there was every indication that the same d--n thing was going to happen to us.

... and there was no indication that the Vietnamese were going to cross oceans and conquer the USA and make us all communists speaking a non-English language.
