It's better to book your excursions from your resort hotel when you get there. They will have excursion / tour desks for you to make bookings. If you book on line, and you find your not up to taking your excursion on the day you have booked it, your out of luck trying to change your booking. The tour companies that work out of the hotels are very dependable, and well worth the prices. We haven't been disappointed with the many tours and excursions we have taken from the resort hotels we have stayed at in the Cancun and Mayan Riviera area. Some of the resort hotels will have a free shuttle to Cancun and Playa del Carmen for shopping, but they get booked up very fast.

We have been vacationing in the Mayan Riviera for two or three weeks at a time for the last several years. We have never had a problem inside or outside of our resort. Tour companies from the resort hotels are not going to put you in a dangerous situation. Cartels are fighting with each other. Cancun has a large military presence in the area also.

I agree that you can go through the hotel. You should also look at the state department's travel advisory. Cancun is very dangerous these days. Five years ago, the cartel wars were all in the north. Not so any more. Recently, there were 14 murders in a 36 hour period.

Tripadvisor is a just a website, not a tour agency. If you click on the tours shown on tripadvisor, it will take you to tour operator- probably Viator- where you can book. Viator is reliable and one of the largest. It's also true that you'll be able to book tours right from your hotel when you get there. The thing you really want to do is go to the Mayan ruins.

If you check your hotel there may be some free tours from them or you can book tours at the hotel. I have never had a problem doing it this way.

You can book tours at your hotel.
