Rules regarding spousal use of VA disability money?
My husband and I have been married 49 years. He receives VA disability which is a decent amount. 3 months ago he took all the money from our joint account and had his check automatically deposited in his personal checking account. I am not on the account and so not have access to it. He has a friend that told him he could do it because his name only was on the check. We have used the money in a joint acct for 20 yrs and now I have been excluded, I an 79 yrs old and cannot get a job...he has ruined me. Any suggestions? We are not contemplating divorce so this is not part of the money. He just decided he wanted control. He has $1000 a month to blow on anything he wants and leaves me nothing. This is an absolute nightmare

Go the the VA, I am sure they will do something, since his pension is based on a 2 person household. If you think you do not have one, contact your local Armory, as they have volunteers who help on VA questions.

VA checks go to the person they are addressed to. He can legally do whatever he wants. But honestly if it bugs you this much and he refuses to change it, consider a divorce. At least then you can make a case for spousal support.

His VA disability is his, his alone, and always has been. I don't know why he has decided not to share it with you anymore but he has that legal right. Please go down to SS tomorrow and file for your own SS or your % spousal right of his.. whichever will be higher. That way you'll have some spending money of your own. Likely not as much as his but enough as long as you aren't having to support the household. Sounds like you might want to open up your own little account as well. Your personal budget has changed. There is likely some reason behind that other than him finding out that he has the legal right because I bet he's always known he has that legal right.
