Whatever happened to carob buds?
Remember carob buds? Back in the 1980s they were very popular as a caffeine free chocolate substitute. I used to buy a big bag of delicious carob buds at the health food store and eat it at the cinema for a fraction of the price it would cost for a couple of chocolate bars at the snack bar. But they seem to have all but disappeared from shelves nowadays, I found some on eBay but of course the postage costs make them way too expensive. People used to say they were healthier than chocolate which is probably just a myth but I'm surprised they are not popular in the 21st century, is anybody with me or am I alone with this?

Carob is naturally sweeter than chocolate, so less sweeteners are needed. However, there are other tradeoffs such as calories, taste, fat content and type of sweetener used. In the end, I think people feel the taste of chocolate overcomes it's negatives.
Trader Joes, Krogers and Whole Foods sell carob products under the Bob's Red Mill label.

You can still find them in health food stores. They're okay. Not chocolate but better than a lot of vegan alternatives.

It’s for dogs who wants the taste of chocolate without the toxicity of chocolate.
Carob didn’t taste that great. It’s not the same as chocolate. It’s like stevia and sugar. Substitute is no match for the real thing.

asking about them at your health food store would probably get you the answer you want.
Maybe they don't sell well any more or maybe the manufacturer stopped making them. ASK the health food store why they no longer sell them

I think people realized they didn't taste that great and were really no healthier than chocolate, so they gradually disappeared.
