Why don't they give you pain medication in hospital if eyes are closed?

    Because you could be dead and it would be a waste of medication.

    if you are not awake to complain or ask for pain med you do not need it, they could OD you if they give just because the last CHARTED dose was a while ago, maybe someone forgot to chart and you are asleep pain free

    If a patient appears to be sleeping, medical staff will not wake them to administer pain medication.

    It's a general "rule" that the sleeping patient is resting comfortably, and needs rest, and the medication can wait until they are awake.

    They can't see you if their eyes are closed, so they may not know you are there.
