By simply knowing the current market value of the car you are considering for purchase before ever stepping foot on the dealership lot.

    It can be easily found.

Being an informed shopper is your best defense against paying too much. Do a lot of online research to determine an accurate and fair market value for the car you want to purchase. Then set your budget based on your research and how much you can comfortably afford to spend. Not monthly payments but Total Cost of car.

You should not spend more than 50% of your ANNUAL INCOME on a car. In other words if you make $20,000 a year your car loan should not exceed more than $10,000.

Please understand that used car asking prices at set higher than the dealer is willing to sell for -- to allow customers to "talk them down." So, when you "talk him down" the dealer actually gets what he wanted for the car and you walk away happy with the "great" deal you got, patting yourself on the back for being such a skilled negotiator.

Check all the fluid levels and the color of the fluids to make sure they are not dirty or burnt smelling.

Offer less money then the sticker price.

You need to know your target price and price range beforehand. Dealers deserve to make a profit so keep that in mind. I think you can find the wholesale car price (somewhere) but that may include a dealer discount to them so their cost may be lower than wholesale.
