Where did the expression "over the moon" (to describe being happy) originate?

    The first time the line "over the moon" was used was in the children's nursery rhyme :

    Hay Diddle Diddle

    The Cat and the Fiddle

    The Cow jumped over the Moon

    The little Dog laughed to see such Fun

    and

    The Dish ran away with the Spoon.

    It's a nonsense rhyme

    but "over the moon" meant that the cow was excited and full of energy.
