It's an outgrowth of the commandment, "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain". "To take in vain" came to mean "to use disrespectfully". Now, if you are calling upon the Savior the Lord Jesus Christ for mercy, then "Jesus Christ" is *not disrespectful. But to call it out in a fit of lust when you see a buxom girl walk by -- that's disrespectful both to her and to the Lord Jesus. It's not difficult to figure out.

However, there's another aspect to "taking the LORD's name in vain" that bears consideration, according to Dennis Prager. The Hebrew, he asserts, is more akin to "Thou shalt not *carry* the name of the LORD in vain." Thus, he says, when you say "Oh my God, what a beautiful piece of music!", it cannot be an instance of taking the LORD's name in vain. He insists the commandment means something more like, "You shall not claim to believe in me and do wicked things." Culturally, we agree with that. We condemn a pastor or priest who falls into sin much more than we do the random guy or gal down the street who does the same thing. We perceive that they bear God's name futilely -- in vain.

    Forgive me.

Calling on The Lord in vain by using 'Jesus Christ' in the context of cursing is being thoughtless and hateful towards our Lord and Saviour. This is perhaps the most common and lightly treated sin today, but God tells us to stop using blasphemy and filthy language and to bless others rather than curse them.

no... unless blindness are cured by Jesus using clay tablets.... Mark 8:23 (Background: Jesus was in Jerusalem to celebrate a feast. More and more people were following Him and bringing the sick and diseased for Him to heal. The words that Jesus taught showed an authority that baffled many and they wondered if He could be the Christ. The Jewish Leaders continued to watch Jesus and engaged in conversations where they might trap Him saying something wrong. Nicodemus, the one who had come to Jesus at night, argued for Jesus and against the Pharisees at one point. The Bible tells us that Nicodemus became “one of them”, which would be a follower of Jesus.)
