Why do people think country side people are racist?

I'm an Asian man and I get annoyed when people think country side people or Southern people are racist. I'm not from the south, but I realized they're not racist like how people had told me. Is it because they're stereotyping and never even given them a chance to just meet and talk them? I actually face more racism up north where I live my whole life than the southern states. I realized this when I joined the Marine Corps, traveled, and met all kinds of people from different backgrounds. Now I understand that racism exist everywhere whether it's north or south of the US but it is clearly not as bad as it was. Southern and country side folks are not racist but why do people still think that they are????

Because population centres like cities and large towns tend to filled with pseudointellectuals, who cant comprehend that their preconceived notions of the south and the countryside could possibly be wrong.

As a whole, they had a very bad reputation for a number of reasons. But unfortunately that bad reputation has gotten in the way of all the good-hearted, open-minded, down-to-earth Southerners who don't want any problems with anyone.

I'm a non-Southern white guy from the city and I was always subconsciously judgmental to anyone from the South. I always labeled them as racist, ignorant, scrappy, and aggressive...but that was mainly due to not being familiar with them. I've met quite a few Southerners with a heart of gold. And I always thought I'd never like their "dumb-sounding" Southern accents until I heard a woman from Tennessee, she sounded so sweet and hospitable like she wouldn't even harm a fly.
