We're moving into a new apartment and no one in our family can agree what color we should paint the living room wall. We like to have an accent wall. We got new furniture and it's all pretty much dark grey/black and relatively simple modern decor. It also has an open kitchen that's going to have bright wood cabinets and a black marble island. The living room also has these wooden Japanese sliding doors that leads into the library/music room. There, we have mahogany wooden bookshelves and a full mahogany piano. We can see the music room's wall from the living room so we were thinking a medium shade red accent wall for the music room would go well to keep with the warm tones of the piano and bookshelves, but we can't decide on the wall colors for the living room and the kitchen. We will probably just go with an accent wall for the living room. Since the living room furniture is kind of dark we don't want to go with a color that's too dark, but it might be alright because the living room has huge windows that take up an entire wall so there's lots of natural light. The kitchen has black tiles and the living room and music room have bright wooden hardwood floors. What do you think would look best? We're also not too set on the red wall for the music room so if you have any suggestions for that as well, feel free.

Update:

one more thing, we also have white track lighting along the whole ceiling so there's lots of artificial lighting too

Red accent walls have been so overdone. Why not pick something fresh, like an apple green? That will be a great accent color with the grays and blacks that you can carry out through out the rest of the open space with some red accessories?

There is a Benjamin Moore color called "Cream Yellow" that matches EVERYTHING. That color would be great in the living room into the kitchen because it is such a neutral tone that whatever color you use for accessories, it will blend in well.

(drats, this site will not allow me to post the same room with autumn colored accents)

I painted the whole downstairs in a house with the "Cream Yellow" and was able to change the furniture and accessories from turquoise tones to autumn shades without having to change the wall color.

I let my 12yo pick 'waikiki' as a colour for a room. I thought hmmmm, but went with it. Love it! Cosy at night, diffuses the bright sunlight nicely. Surprisingly goes with all the furniture and art and trims and wooden floors.

Am sure there'd be some lovely reds as well. Only tip would be, if there's a lot of natural and artificial light pick a colour with a low reflective value. Higher ones can look patchy and yuck in different lights.

Just be bold. Get everyone to choose a colour or two, get sample pots and paint stripes from floor to ceiling to see how they look in the different lights. Everyone will probably say 'THAT'S the one!' Then just roll some primer/undercoat over the lot and away you go.

An appropriate shade of green can be considered a neutral; the correct shade of green is also warm, and goes with every color as well as wood tones; it goes especially well with black. Green reflects the nature that shows through the windows, and emphasizes house plants.
