Sudden instagram followers?

I have an instagram account where I just post photos of my cats and pictures of NYC. All of a sudden within like one day I gained about 100 followers. Now every hour I'm gaining like 40 new followers. Most of the accounts are like Italian bloggers who have like 20k+ followers and only follow about 1,000 people. I'm not complaining but I'm just confused why they're all following me all of a sudden. Most of my other followers are other cat instagrams. Is there some sort of algorithm? How are all of these super popular instagram pages finding my account?

    Perhaps they are following all the people on a picture you commented on. Then unfollowing them a few days later hoping to gain followers. That happened to me before with foreign Instagram models about a 150 of then followed me lol. They all unfollowed me within a few days. I wonder if it's some sort of app to gain followers or something.
