Photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy, carbon dioxide and water into glucose. Respiration is the conversion of glucose into energy and the waste products are carbon dioxide and water.

Figure out the chemical inputs and outputs of both processes, and you will note the similarity. That's why a sealed balanced aquarium, with just sunlight entering the aquarium, can have a viable small ecosystem within it that will last for a long time.
