For my son's room, I found this great wallpaper that was basically white with pinstripes of red, yellow, blue and green that I hung on two walls. For fun, I painted the body of a small dresser red and the drawers were painted yellow with green painted knobs. I put down a blue area rug and on the far wall, we had a little fun with the paint...I rolled my son's hands with paint and he put his handprints on the wall...then we switched to the yellow paint and then the green paint so he had his little handprints on the wall. A year later, we did it again on his birthday, then again his next birthday. It was fun to see the different size hand prints on that one wall.

Fast forward........when it was time to redecorate his room, we cut out a piece of his sheetrocked wall and framed his handprints before repairing the wall and repainting the room.

Blackboard paint on the walls in a big wide strip around the room. And some chalks.

At four years old I would think he could have some say in this. What is his favorite color. What does he like.

Make sure you bolt and chest of drawers or shelves to the walls.

Have a place for his toys and places where he can put away his own clothes.

As to decorating, ask him what he wants on his walls. 4 is old enough to have likes and dislikes. Make it simple and easy to change: posters maybe?

You can find just about any kind of decal wall decorations on line these days. My 4 yo is still into dinosaurs so we have decals of them all over. As far as color goes, can't go wrong with blue and white.
