Isn't it interesting how historically meat was something expensive and nowadays it's often cheaper than vegetables and fruit?

Yeah, probably because most meat is pretty much produced in factories now adays.

Well, in the US, since the agriculture industry subsidizes corn so much, we can produce meat for far less than compared to other countries. In fact, just about ALL of our food is made with corn or corn-derivatives such as High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Furthermore, economic supply and demand has allowed vegetable prices to skyrocket - especially with the "Organic" craze.
Go to other countries and you'll find the opposite is true. Meat remains fairly expensive because of the amount of land and resources it takes to produce, yet vegetables remain cheap.

I don't know where you shop, but in my area meat is VERY high priced.

Vegetables ought to be cheaper but not enough people eat them these days to keep economy of scale in operation. It's a shame because we'd all be healthier and wealthier if we did.
