Is it possible to clean a headphone plug using alcohol?
Today I bought some new headphones as my previous ones stopped working properly. The new ones however, seemed to not work right either. In any headphone jack (smart phone, PC, even Nintendo 3DS), when the plug was moved, it would cause sound loss and static.
However, on a whim, I tried rubbing the metal part of the plug with some hand sanitizer I have since I read that sometimes the metallic part can become dirty which makes stuff like that happen. After this, the static is pretty much gone. Could it seriously be that the alcohol in the sanitizer cleaned the metal tip of the plug enough to stop the static? Or was it possible I did something else to fix it without knowing?

Wiping a plug with a clean, dry paper towel is often good enough.
Adding alcohol, while it can't hurt anything,
will make very little if any difference in most cases.

no ... usually solvents decompose its insulating rings .....
take it to a repair shop and ask them to clean it with a DRY CONTACT CLEANER spray ..

All you did was clean it. That may be all it needed - but this type of failure is usually caused by wear on the contacts of either the plug or socket (or both). Often, these connection points are plated and the plating can wear off. The only reliable solution is to replace the parts.
