You never enter a PIN when you're using a CREDIT card at point of purchase. You enter a PIN only when you're using a DEBIT card.

If you have a credit/debit card that has been issued by your bank and has the MC or Visa logo on it, that card is tied to your checking account and payment is automatically deducted from your checking account. You can use that card as either a credit purchase or a debit purchase.

If you want to run the card as "credit", all you have to do is swipe the card. If you want to run it as "debit", you swipe the card & then enter your PIN. If you hand the card to the clerk, the transaction will always run as "credit". The clerk can't run it as "debit" because the clerk won't know your PIN.

All the card reader at a check-out stand or an ATM is doing is reading your card's account number, which is incorporated in the black bar on the back of your card (and also on the front of your card - in case the clerk has to manually enter your card number). The information in that bar is NOT your checking account number; it's your card number. All that black bar knows about you is your card number. It doesn't know your address, or your SS number, or anything else.

If you scratch that black bar or damage it, or if it's wet, or if it has oil on it from your fingertips, the card reader may be unable to read your account number. The card reader will show something like "Unable to read card". If that keeps happening, you'll need to call your bank and ask them to issue you a duplicate card. It will have the same account number. When it arrives, take a pair of scissors and cut the old card in two and throw it away.

  • Unless they use a POS cash system then no they can't see it when you're using your credit card. The only thing they should be able to pull up is your email address if you've given it to them before.

It's not easy but if they are crafty with computers it can be done. Probably the average retail worker wouldn't be able to, so I wouldn't be overly worried but technically yep

The address doesn't appear although the name sometimes does. Cards can be traced by the police though if there is a problem with fraudulent use of the card.
