Why are my iron levels low?

I recently went to the doctor about having diarrhoea every month or so, accompanied with dizziness and nausea. They got me to have a blood test, which revealed that my iron levels were low (at 8). I have to take iron supplements to get my levels up, and my doctor says I'll have to take it for about six months and then have another blood test and have a review, but I just don't understand why my levels are so low. I'm not pregnant and have never been pregnant, my periods aren't too heavy, I haven't lost lots of blood for whatever reason, and I eat food that's got iron in it, so why should I have low iron? It's just a bit worrying because I'm anxious there's something else going on that's causing my levels to be so low. I did have food poisoning back in February (vomiting, diarrhoea) so I don't know if that's linked. I got the blood test results and iron supplements recommendation from my doctor over the phone, and there's so many questions I forgot to ask, which is why I'm here. I've been reading stuff online but haven't got many answers about why I might have it, because nothing seems to make sense.

Update:

Another thing I wanted to ask, as I'm on the subject: if my levels are at 8, am I borderline on having a blood transfusion? My doctor didn't mention it, they just said to go on the iron supplements. What if my levels don't go up after six months? I'm going to take Spatone liquid supplements.

Update 2:

Doctor didn't mention anything about any stomach-related diseases that might affect iron absorption. They just said to take the supplements and see how it goes. I wish I could have asked more questions on the phone to my doctor now. :(

Update 3:

In terms of Coeliac disease, I'm not sure about that. My doctor said that my blood test results showed nothing sinister except for low iron levels, but I'm just worried there's something underlying going on, as I originally did the blood tests for diarrhoea and some other symptoms which I mentioned. I don't know if low iron is linked to this.

Update 4:

Sorry, forgot to mention. I'm 22 (23 soon) and female.

Update 5:

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions, they've been really useful and put my mind at ease. I'm glad I came here and asked. I've just been a bit worried.

You don't give your age, but if you are female and of menstruation age there's your reason right there.

Otherwise, if there is any worry about why your iron has dropped, your doctor will organise tests to check. There's no need for worry if he/she isn't worried. Iron deficiency anaemia is easily corrected with a course of iron and you'll soon be back to normal. Don't obsess over it. There's no need.

Iron deficiency can be caused by a poor diet or certain intestinal diseases that affect how the body absorbs iron. Take your iron medication and you'll be fine.

In women under 50 iron deficiency usually is caused by blood loss from periods, and isn't usually investigated.

Except: If you're getting frequent diarrhoea, the other main thing to think about is coeliac disease, which can cause diarrhoea, and reduces the gut's ability to absorb iron. There is a blood test for coeliac disease.

You might want to ask your doctor about this?

    Doctor

EDIT: it depends what your 8 value is.

    1. The usual measurement of iron stores is ferritin. Our reference range is 12-300 ng/ml, so a ferritin level of 8 is low. On its own it indicates low iron stores.

    2. You will have had a blood count done, which will have a haemoglobin (Hb) level. In women, our reference range is 110-150 g/L, though some labs still report in g/dL, so the range there would be 11-15. If your Hb is lower than 11, then you are anaemic. If not, you aren't.

If your haemoglobin is 8 g/dL, it's low, but in someone otherwise well you would not be thinking of transfusion.

EDIT 2: From what you say, you may well have had a test for coeliac disease already, and nobody here is in a position to advise if you have. There are many causes of iron deficiency, though you say you're young enough to be having periods, so serious causes such as cancer are much less likely. If you are worried I can only advise you to speak to your doctor again. If you have some particular concern, mention that to your doctor, otherwise you'll still worry about it.

Hi so many females suffer from this due to the monthly period cycle and need to take iron pills. there are other causes which only a specialist could advise you about.

Could be a lot of things. Simply eat more greens. Kale is great. Hydrate with water.
