Why are they making a big deal about something a person did when they were (17) in High School in 1982?

Because this is a man who will if appointed be part of the highest court in the USA for life and his morality and honesty are of huge importance.

I never tried to rape anyone at 17, and I don't have any friends that did. Getting drunk and puking, or smoking some weed (say), is not the same thing at all. No one would be on him about being a bit of a wild one (if he had admitted to it in face of the obvious evidence that he was), but being an almost rapist or a store robber, well, there are limits. And apparently this guy thought so poorly of others that he found it to be a big joke to try to rape a 15 year old. Imagine it was your sister or your daughter. You wouldn't say, "oh well, boys will be boys". Not if you are a normal person, you wouldn't.

This isn't an interview for a job bagging groceries here. this is for a post on the Supreme Court, one of nine people who decide what is law in the country. I don't want a near-rapist in that post; I don't want a guy that can't even admit that maybe he was less than perfect as a teenager and denies that he had some problems. How could you?

This is all about who he is as a person. And he is apparently not a good person. No remorse, no admission of imperfection and tales of how hard he worked to change and become a good person. No sir. Just "everyone is out to get me". That isn't acceptable. Not for the job he wants, it isn't.

In today's World, everything is out in the open about you on social media. But when this happened, social media didn't exist. So we have to rely on heresay to form an opinion.
