I never needed any gadgets to make an avocado begin to grow. All that you need is a water-filled jar, some toothpicks, and sunlight. You just stick 4 toothpicks around the avocado. Then, you place it on top of the jar's opening. This should get the root system going.

Only with great difficulty. Avocados are trees and therefore need lots of sunlight.

Yes you can. If you want it to fruit get a grafted dwarf root-stock tree. Trees grown from a pit you've harvested yourself will produce a nice house plant, but they can grow too tall (and spindly) for indoors and very, very rarely fruit.

Get either a dimmable HPS lamp (uses the most electricity) or a full-spectrum led light (very little electricity use) and give the plant at least 12 hours of light per day.
