    It's a complicated, multi-faceted answer.

But I enjoyed doing it for 46 years.

After a lifetime of it (44 years), I effing hate working on other peoples cars, or even my own except when doing a ground-up restoration. But it does pay the bills, and then some.

I love performance, increasing the horsepower. As a mechanic as a profession, I got burned out. I did it as a hobby, once I started as a profession, everyone was wanting me to fix their vehicles when I was off of work, it became too much. However, I do love it when I find someone having a problem and I go help them and their car starts up and runs fine, so they are no longer stranded

    I love the money.

Most customers don't know the first thing about cars, so you can feed them a load of crap and then charge them as much as you want for 10 minutes work.
