Teresa of Ávila experienced periods of religious ecstasy when she was ill. She claimed to have experienced a perfect union with God. She believed that Jesus Christ had appeared to her in bodily form, although invisible. The visions lasted for 2 years.
Pope Gregory XV must have believed her experience was authentic as they canonized her.
However, some of her friends thought the visions were the work of the Devil.
It could also be interpreted as hallucinations resulting from psychosis.
