Ford 390 fe?

Have a 1968 Ford F-250 with a 390 low miles. I want to put a bigger camshaft in it. How much can I have with out hitting the pistons?

First of all make sure it is a 390! A lot of engines have been passed off as 390's that weren't. Just because the engine code is for a 390 doesn't mean that is the way it is now.

Secondly cam selection is a function of target RPM range. High lift and/or long duration cams can result in poor street performance.

get a long duration cam rather than a high lift cam. after all it is about how long tyhe vaklve is open and not how far

Hi so with a camshaft it's not the amount of lifting which improves cylinder filling but the period the valves are open so the lobes on the sports camshaft will be wider so more mixture is let in and exhaust gases escape one a shorter period.
