Is it safe to put a power strip inside a shoe box?

Here’s the deal. I have my power strip plugged in and like 7 cords coming out of it. It’s a complete mess. So what I thought was if I just put it inside a shoe box, still allowing it to be plugged in, and all the cords still able to come out (because there’s those small holes on a shoe box on both sides). All of the cords would be contained in the box and it wouldn’t look messy. But is it safe to have the strip in the box? Can it cause a fire?

If appearance is your concern, the shoe box is WORSE than whatever you currently have.

Just as safe as laying it on the floor or attaching it to the wall. If it shorts out it can cause a fire no matter where you have it.

It would probably be OK but I wouldn't do it.

Sounds like it COULD cause a fire. Better to use those little wire ties that come on a loaf of bread to tie the cords together every so far.
