When I was involved in a collision, the other driver found it difficult to say "I didn't see him coming" when I had my headlights on

Your the stupid one many modern cars have running lights which come on when you start the engine.
They have reduced the number of accidents.

A lot of darker coloured cars sort of blend into the road at a distance, the running lights makes them more obvious?

Hey Dufus...ever hear of daytime running lights? Many vehicles have them and are considered a safety item.

It reduces crashes, even in the middle of the day. Where it really comes in as a safety factor is in the north. The more and more you go to the north, the more effective they become. In many nations they are mandatory so even YOU would have to have them on.

As has been stated some are automatic. And FYI, although many people don't seem to realize it, all 50 states have passed a law that requires lights to be on when use of the windshield wipers is necessary. Besides I feel that those of you who DON"T use their lights during the day are unsafe. I live on a paved rural road and many times a dark colored car is indistinguishable from the pavement until it's almost on top of you. One with their lights on can be seen from a mile or more. It's a safety matter and a matter of BEING seen rather than seeing.

Some vehicles do it automatically. In some states, drivers are required to have their headlights on if the windshield wipers are on. It is much easier to see a vehicle with it's lights on.

States encourage the use of lights during the day time. Supposedly it is easier to see those vehicle. It is not a law. The US government mandates daytime running lights. It is for safety.

You've not driven much, have you? Or you've done all your driving to your nearest Maccy D's and back.
Anything that helps other drivers see distant approaching vehicles helps.
I've just had three weeks in a Chevvy Impala which turned the lights on with the key.
