2 second google search dude, next time try that first.

    -------------------------------

Etymology. The name sperm whale is a truncation of spermaceti whale. Spermaceti, originally mistakenly identified as the whales' semen, is the semi-liquid, waxy substance found within the whale's head.

because the slimy stuff in the head of sperm whales (called spermeceti, or whale "seed") reminded whalers of sperm. Whalers really needed women on board, apparently.

The name comes from the oils found in the whale's head the whalers prized. It was thought to look like shale sperm, so the name "sperm whale" cam to be connected with this species of whale.

when whalers cut one up, the fluid that comes out of the bump on its head has similar viscosity as sperm.
