How can I stop my dog from barking?

I have never had a barky dog until now, so I have no experience with it. According to my roommates, she doesn t bark when I am not home, but when I am, she barks at the door, and passers by and the two roommates she is not as fond of. They swear she is silent when I am not home, and my friend who pet-sat her when I was away on holiday told me she never barked while I was away.

Google, "Stop excessive barking" & start some training. Lots of things that can help you in your training. Spray bottle set to go as far as it can, can be a long distance correction tool. Dog starts barking, squirt him. A soda can with some pea gravel inside, tape over hole on top, attach bail & it is ready to use. When dog starts barking, toss the can by the bail so it lands next to the barking dog. Both will stop the immediate barking.

Teaching or training is doing the same thing over & over & over again & again until it is perfect. repetitive, repetitive, repetitive. So one spray isn't enough or on can toss will not be enough. Have two or three cans so you don't have to retrieve a can before another correction.

There are other things you can do but these two alone & your corrections will eventually stop the dog from excessive barking.

I think she is only alerting you as your protector & she thinks she is doing good, but you don't like it. You can stop it if it is really necessary.

First figure out whether she does bark. Record it or something

Proper training/correction which are your responsibility, not the dogs.

Holiday? What's that? IMO holidays don't exist when you have pets to care for. In 65 plus years I've only had two holidays, plus a honeymoon.

It sounds like she might feel very protective over you if she’s only doing this around you. Whenever it starts up, go to her and let her see that you’re okay. Try to block her view of whatever she’d barking at and try to distract her. If she’s small enough to pick up, pick her up and physically turn her away from the trigger so that she can’t see it and she’s forced to focus on just you. If she’s bigger, lead her away with a leash or by her collar. Scold her (but don’t yell- yelling will make her think you’re “barking” with her) when she starts barking and then take her away, and praise her when she stops barking. It may take several weeks or maybe even longer for her to get it, but try to be patient with her. She’s only trying to protect you, but that doesn’t make the behavior okay. If after a few months of consistent training, she still doesn’t stop, there are collars that vibrate when they bark, but these should only be used as a last resort as they will be scary for her.

Gently place a pillow case over its head, then smack it 10 to 12 times with a hammer.
