Is it possible to have left side appendicitis?

The last few days I’ve been having sharp pain in my left abdomen, I’ve been nauseous, and I’ve had Diarrhea. My mom said two of my aunts had pain in their left side before getting their appendix out, but when I look it up it doesn’t seem possible.

It hurts extremely bad, especially when I move or put any pressure on my left side. If it’s something else and someone has an idea, let me know, cause I want it to stop.

That's not where the appendix is, especially since you feel the pain, apparently, *way* over on the left side. Sometimes appendicitis pain starts near the belly button before moving down to the appendix a few hours or days later.

Most people who are worried about appendicitis and have very bad abdominal pain, even in the right location, turn out to have something other than appendicitis. Much more common sources of extremely bad abdominal pain than appendicitis are constipation, a urinary tract problem (like a kidney stone), and for female patients, a pelvic organ issue. There are many other things, like an ulcer or other stomach issue (with pain on the left side), that can do this.

I know you said you have diarrhea. But before that started, were your bowel movements regular and normal? Because if you weren't having normal, soft bowel movements in the days before the diarrhea started, it's not unusual... sorry to be a little graphic here... to have liquid stool leaking around a fecal plug in the intestine. A fecal plug from constipation can cause pretty strong pain.

Here's where the appendix is found, at least in nearly everyone who isn't obese or in the third trimester of pregnancy: picture a line running between your belly button and the right hip bone sticking out in front (your right, that is). Two-thirds across that line, closer to the hip than the belly button, is above the appendix. Something a doctor will do to check for appendicitis is press down very firmly at (and in other locations near) that spot. If pain surges when pressure is *released,* that's considered a positive sign for appendicitis, and the doctor will order an image. The test is not 100% foolproof. It can have false negative or false positive results.

But for me the bottom line is that you have "extremely bad" abdominal pain that is worrying you. Most likely given your question, it is due to something other than appendicitis... but still should be checked in person by a doctor. That's the way to begin to figure out what it really is and what to do about it.

Wishing you good luck and an accurate diagnosis and feeling much better very soon.

Left side pain is usually gas pain or bowel irritation, or much less frequently; pancreatitis or gallstones that are blocking the bile duct. If the problem lasts more than 48 hours without any improvement, its time to see a doctor. If you get a high fever with those symptoms, its an emergency.

Appendicitis pain could possibly spread to the left side but would not originate there unless a person had all of their internal organs reversed (Situs inversus), which is very rare.
