What happened to all the corn detassling jobs for American teenagers?

I don't see our kids being picked by buses to go detassle for the summer. What happened to those jobs?

First of all, it used to be a badge of honor to have a job as a teenager instead of an object of scorn. Perhaps the majority of teenagers today are being raised the wrong way by their parents.

They're still out there. Or at least they are in Nebr.

I grew up in corn country.

In fact there was a huge corn field behind the houses across the street from mine. So I used to play in the corn fields and try to flush out the pheasants that were enjoying the kernels that had fallen to the ground.

Never once went on a detassling job. Never once did I ever hear of such a thing. And that was in the 1950s.

My point...such jobs never existed in my corn country. ANS.
