The 4th commandment says, do not take the Lords name in vain. I would assume that they think that by changing the spelling they aren't breaking the commandment.

It is like Jebus for Jesus, and Bayble for Bible. People want to mock Christianity, but, they have a niggling thought that it might be a bad idea, so, they mask the actual names just in case.

Maybe it's a reflection of the way so many Christians are behaving like slack-jawed yokels these days.

Arguably it is British colloquialism from the saying of '' Gordon Bennet'' popular during the WW1 years and often simply expressed oh ''gawd'' .

It was / is an expression of surprise or bewilderment similar in kind to that of ''cor blimey''.

The latter presumably came from ''God blind me'' an association of the result of indiscriminate mustard gas bombing.

This information brought to you freely from the lower cupboards of my brain. :)

I was much fortunate in my youth to know people that fought in that war, I consider their interaction a contribution to my being.

    Atheist.
