    Lennon

  • Considering the way it ended for Johnny, Johnny. Especially when he pleads "whenever you're in trouble won't you stand by me?". Almost makes me cry.

Ben E King definitely has the better voice, and his version still holds up. Lennon used too much efx on his vocal. It never worked for me, especially on that song. I like Lennon's arrangement/interpretation, but not his voice.

In our band, we play Mickey Gilley's version (From the Urban Cowboy soundtrack) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_e-_Mt0WiY

I guess I'm the only one here who prefers Lennon's version. It's the one I know best, and I love the guitar solo -- incredibly simple yet beautiful.

Ben E. King's is the one I'm used to. The first time I ever heard that song was when I saw the movie Stand by Me. The movie uses the Ben E. King version. I've never even heard John Lennon's version. I'm not saying it's bad, but now that my ear and brain have been steeped in Ben E. King, that'll always be for me the original, the better.
