What is the meaning of this symbol a sideways B from a newspaper article from 1874?

Update:

Also, where can I find that 'symbol' in a Word document or elsewhere to copy into a Word doc?

It's part of the design of a horse brand. It doesn't have any meaning besides that.

Brands (burned into the hide) show which ranch livestock (cows, horses, etc.) belong to. This was important when several ranchers all shared large areas of land for their livestock. The sideways B symbol is pronounced "lazy B".

It is a branding mark for horses (or cattle) used to identify the owner.

Sideways characters in branding are referred t as 'lazy' so the rotated B is called a 'lazy B' (not intended as a term of abuse!).
