It's a President vetoing an appropriations bill with too much spending and being willing to let the government shut down if Congress doesn't reduce the spending.

Venezuela. I'm curious, for example, how many of the pro-socialism crowd are familiar with what's happened to that oil-rich nation over the last two decades.

Looking at it today - plagued by empty store shelves, chronic hyperinflation, widespread looting, and severe shortages of food and medicine - you'd never know that before 1999, it was one of the wealthiest countries in South America. When The Heritage Foundation published its first edition of the Index of Economic Freedom in 1995, Venezuela scored two points above the worldwide average.

So what happened? According to The Atlantic:

"The experiment with '21st-century socialism' as introduced by the late President Hugo Chavez, a self-described champion of the poor who vowed to distribute the country's wealth among the masses, and instead steered the nation toward the catastrophe the world is witnessing under his handpicked successor (Nicolas) Maduro, has been a cruel failure."

Harding/Coolidge. They turned around a Depression in 18 months by cutting taxes and spending by 50%. Among other things.

Today Democrats refuse to cut spending. And they currently want to reverse the Trump tax cuts. While cutting taxes increases economic activity and eventually revenues you have to do both for it to work well.

the best was a while back in 1994 and '95. The Contract With America led to the first and only recent balanced budget. Kudos to the president at the time -- Bill Clinton -- for signing it.
