Do you put an a or an an in front of SO?

It would be correct as "a significant other" but since it is an acronym it makes an "es" sound, which makes me want to put an an in front of it. Which way would be proper?

Sources are appreciated!

When the letter "s" is mentioned, it is a consonant, but sounds like it starts with "eh" and, as a result, requires "an." Yet, when it is pronounced as part of a word, like "simple", it also has a consonant sound (sssss) and this requires "a" as the indefinite article. One example is "a simple statement."

I would just type out "a significant other" rather than using SO. But if I were using "SO," then I would use "an" in front of it.
