Why was the KJV produced?

According to the Puritans it was produced to agree with the teachings of King James.

Why did the translators of the:

ASB, NIV, NASB, RSV, NRSV, Amplified, NJB, YLT (and the list could go on) feel the need to re- translate the bible into English?

Because as one translator put it. (Benjamin Wilson)

"The KJV has over 20,000 known errors in it."

"It is a notable fact that King James Translation is far from being a faithful reflection of the mind of the Spirit, as contained in the original Greek."

"There are some thousands of words which are either mistranslated, or too obscurely rendered; beside others which are now obsolete."

"It has been highly colored in many places with the party ideas and opinions of those who made it, to be worthy of being placed in it as a genuine record."

Dr. Macknight said about the KJV:

"it was made a little too complaisant to the King, in favoring his notions"

"that their translation is partial, speaking the language of, and giving authority to one sect."

Dr. Gell:

"and only adapted to one sect;"

"some of the translators complained that they could not follow their own judgment in the matter, but were restrained by 'reasons of state'."

The truly sad thing is some answered.

'The KJV is an inspired translation into English'. My stepfather actually believed Jesus spoke using 'thee' and 'thou'.

Please understand, for the day and age it was translated, they did a somewhat good job.

Yet the translators were limited in their knowledge of the languages (Raca at Matt 5:22; the translators didn't know the meaning of this Greek word, so they inserted it into the English text)

Their oldest Greek and Hebrew text was from the 9th Century C.E.

If there was a difference between the original languages and the Latin Vulgate, they went with the Vulgate. (Ex 3:14 is an example 'I am' in the Vulgate, verses 'I will prove to be' in the Hebrew (See scripture4all.net)

The KJV was produced because of England's King James wanting to promote the best translation available for Believers to have on-hand.

Without causing insult anybody I will briefly tell you how the King James Bible came to be written. When James was a young man he liked other young men! his mother would very frequently yell at him James Jehovah does not like you in the bed with boys! So James grew tired of this and had his mother locked up in the tower where one day she fell to her death.

James took the Bible and commission people to rewrite the Bible totally removing the word Jehovah except for one time and he softened the words and scriptures about homosexuality to read men who go around with other men.

that was basically the whole idea of writing the King James Bible. To make a Bible that didn't have that annoying name Jehovah in it.

And it was less hard on his fellow gay people.

There were many English translations at the time. Anyone who thought they knew ancient Greek could make a translation. King James wanted a better translation for all the people compiled by a league of professional scholars, so that everyone was on the same page. It was the same thinking as the ANSI, except government sanctioned.

Yeah...it competes with the NIV, which I study under. I never got the old style english in the King James.

The KJV was produced by God to keep His promise to preserve His Word in the world. The KJV is perfect, 100% accurate.

Catholicism is a move of satan against man. Catholicism leads to eternal torment in the lake of fire, because catholicism teaches works for salvation. That leads to hell. There are tons of other false doctrines in catholicism, and catholicism didn't even exist for over 300 years after the Bible was complete and compiled. So get away from catholicism..

Jesus loves you and wants to bless your life freely :) Most of all, Jesus wants you with Him forever, and not in hell. There is no "purgatory". The truth is that every belief except one will lead to eternal torment in the lake of fire for every person. Because nothing pays for our sins except the death and blood of Jesus, the sacrifice of Jesus that is already accomplished by Him . Jesus loves you! The truth is that Jesus is God, and Jesus died on the cross to pay for all of our sins in full, and then Jesus resurrected from the dead. Nothing else pays for our sins, not works, not deeds, not religions. So the only way to heaven and to avoid hell, is by believing in Jesus for eternal life (John 6:47), without adding any of your own works (Romans 4:5). Believe in Jesus to take you to heaven, and you will be in heaven, no matter what, guaranteed. That easy, thanks to Jesus! Tell Jesus that you thank Him that you will be with Him in heaven when you die, because you believe in Jesus! It is too late to be saved, after death.

The primary reason was that existing English translations of the Bible were seen as problematic in one way or another.

Most especially: the very popular Geneva Bible (which continued to be the most popular English translation for several decades after the KJV was first published) and its violent anti-Catholic commentary was fomenting civil unrest between Protestants and Catholics. (Or - at least - it was perceived to be responsible.)

So: the crown wanted a new translation, one that would replace the incendiary Geneva Bible in popular Protestant esteem, one that would not foment civil unrest, and one that would be acceptable (as "the official Bible") to both Anglicans and Puritans (these being by far the two most influential Christian groups in England at the time, the Roman Catholic Church being for all practical purposes **legally** banned at the time).

There were other reasons. For example: there was indeed also a desire / perceived need for a more modern translation. (The English language was changing quite rapidly at this time, as you can see by comparing Bibles of the period. It continued to change rapidly and to a large degree the KJV changed with it for several decades. Existing translations employed typeface, vocabulary, spelling and grammatical conventions that were no longer in common use...though in fact the first edition of the KJV also used the outdated Germanic typeface.)

There were a number of English translations of the Bible available including the Geneva Bible, which omitted bits inconvenient to the Calvinist religion, the Great Bible and the Bishops' Bible. These had all been produced in a hurry. A new translation was needed for the whole of England, Wales and Scotland reflecting the episcopal nature of the Church of England. It was far from a modern speech Bible. It was written in the early 17th century, but the style of language was supposed to be 15th century, to give it the authority of age. In fact, the writers made rather a mess of reproducing 15th century English especially when dealing with the obsolete pronouns thou, thee and ye. The poetry of the KJV cannot be denied and many expressions we now use have their origins in it. Unfortunately, it is not a very accurate translation and despite claims made on the title page, much of it relies on the Latin Vulgate version.

The instructions to the translators was that they make it a monarchy-friendly translation.
