I am trying to become a manager at my job and I have a question about the process?
My ex manager who works at another store message me the other day about a opening at his store. He asked if I was interested and I am and he said that his manager saw my application and wants to interview. But today he said before he does he wants me to ask both my store manager and e commerce manager if it's ok I can leave and take the position. Idk why I have to get their permission to take the position when it's my career decision and not there's. Feels kinda awkward and that he should be the one asking, not me. How should I go about it?

It is always good to notify managers about future employment offers and acceptances. Perhaps you’re a relatively loyal and productive employee, and they (current store managers) view you as a necessity; you could be transferred between the two stores. I’m not sure what kind of occupation you have, or what kind of binding or non-binding contracts you signed, but managers shouldn’t be able to physically prevent you from leaving and going to another store (depending on the store), especially one within the same company; if that’s what you were worried about. Perhaps you only need to notify your managers of your employment offer and (possible) acceptance, rather than seek their permission. I recommend you be blunt about the situation and bring the employment offer up to your managers, and rather than asking for their permission, ask for input.

Many jobs do this. Just tell them you want to interview for ___ position and I was told to clear it with you first. If they are good people it should be ok

Transferring store to store, should be no big deal.
You ask Human Resources to arrange it.

Oh boy, it's professional courtesy for you to inform your current bosses, where you are, if it would be okay because of the business needs, they may say it's okay but that you can't leave until they find someone to replace you. Its a business decision to assign new roles however if the manager is not okay with you leaving, then you won't be able to make that move. The store manager you work under, rules in making the best decision for the business.
