Why do ex Jehovah's Witnesses refer to themselves as the "Awake class"?

Why would they consider that they were not awake, when they were being indoctrinated by a magazine called "Awake!"?

Oh, if only more JWs would wake up to the truth about their cult!

They awake magazine is not an indoctrination magazine! Although they do call themselves The awake class primarily because of the awake magazine! That's the whole purpose of the awake magazine to wake you up and to grow you up so that you're not just part of the herd! To grow you up into Jesus Christ enough so that you are man or woman enough to open up your own Ministry and preach the kingdom of Jesus Christ and of Jehovah God not as one of the herd that is one of the leaders of the herd!

indoctrinate simply means "brainwash" to many people. But its meaning isn't always so negative. When this verb first appeared in English in the 17th century, it simply meant "to teach"-a meaning that followed logically from its Latin root. The "doc" in the middle of indoctrinate derives from the Latin verb docēre, which also means "to teach." Other offspring of "docēre" include "docent" (referring to a college professor or a museum guide), "docile," "doctor," "doctrine," and "document." It was not until the 19th century that "indoctrinate" began to see regular use in the sense of causing someone to absorb and take on certain opinions or principles.

All religions are technically cults and each cult gets to make its own rules and beliefs. Evidently this is one of the beliefs they have.

A modern sect only 148 years old pretending to be Christian cannot possibly be awake!

I'm sorry but that's like asking a delusional man why he's delusional.

You might as well ask JWs

...if they have ever personally brought someone to faith

...if they have ever publicly criticise anyone in a leadership position

...if they ever check quotes and information provided by JWorg

...if they have fully researched the bible for verses that support the Trinity.

...if they can understand other people's viewpoint

...if they have seen or heard of a single NT manuscript with YHWH in them...

all questions the JWs won't answer or if they do they will divert, deflect or attack you for!

One of the things that totally amazes me about JWism is how much literature the WTBS spews out, including their jw.org website. I mean, if you took the time to read it all, you would have very little time if any to actually read the Bible--which is probably intentional.
