Why did Trump lie about some of the ex-Presidents secretly supporting his wall?

He thought he could get away with it. None of the former Presidents wants the wall HE is proposing.

He is a life long conman and lying is what he does.

Trump has the bad habit of not thinking before he speaks! Conservatives always made a big deal of Obama saying hmm before he spoke. Yet pausing and gathering one's thoughts is a sign of higher intelligence!

There are clips of them saying that we need a wall. Obama, Clinton, etc.

Even Hillary Clinton, Pelosi, Schumer, etc have said in press conferences just a couple years ago that there needs to be a wall/fence/barrier. A few years ago they were all calling for a crackdown on illegal immigration. These interviews and press conferences are not hard to find.

The reasons they are opposed now are political:

- The promise of a wall got Trump elected; they don't want to energize his base

- Their base hates Trump, and are knee-jerk opposed to everything Trump wants to do. They don't want to piss off their base by giving Trump his way or cooperating with him

- They help energize their base by standing up to Trump and opposing him

- They are using Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration to paint him as a racist by conflating illegal immigration with all immigration

- In the places where they did put up barriers, the barriers have been successful. They don't want Trump's administration to be successful

In his world, only he can tell the truth and nobody else.

To be fair, Nixon told Trump he wanted a wall. It's not Trump's fault Nixon died.
