Theoretically at least to stop the spread of Communism. Well, there aren't many Communist countries left so maybe it was a success? (mind you I would have preferred a less violent method)

The US was invited to help defend the Republic of Vietnam, child.

You obviously need to do a lot more study to understand what really happened. Get to it.

Because North Vietnam invaded South Vietnam.

During WWII, American officials promised to help Ho Chi Minh get independence from France after the war if he came into the war on the side of the Allies. He did, and after the war, the US forgot, so Ho turned to the Communists for help. He probably would have defeated the French in 1954, but the US believed in the domino theory and moved in to protect the French regime from a Communist takeover. American intervention gradually escalated until LBJ greatly increased our involvement because, he said, he didn't intend to be the first American president to lose a war.

You really need to brush up on U.S. history. The U.S. did not "invade" Vietnam. We were asked to help with the North Vietnamese and communist aggression by the French and the South Vietnamese government.
