Identical twins occur in approximately 0.4% of natural pregnancies and 1-5% of IVF pregnancies. It's well-known that IVF increases the possibility of twins, but it's lesser know that it also increased the possibility of *spontaneous* identical twinning. About 1.7% of births that were 2-3 day embryo transfers result in monozygotic twinning, and about 2.5% of 5-6 day transfers. The higher incidence of twinning in 5-6 day embryos could be at least partially accounted for by embryos that are biopsied for preimplantaton genetic testing (PGD/PGS). It's hypothesized that the biopsy itself could encourage spontaneous splitting of the embryo, resulting in identical twins.

Source(s): Only had 1 baby from IVF w/PGS, thank goodness!

Quite rare, even twins who look the exact same aren't necessarily identical, twins that have the same genetic blueprint are considered identical but they can still have different fingerprints and different footprints.

Identical twins in statistics is less than 1% of births. It's like 1 in every 250 births are identical twins.

I have twins but they are boy/girl so obviously not identical and well they don't even look alike. One looks like me and one looks like their dad. They even have different eye colors. The one that looks like my husband has brown eyes like him and the one who looks like me has blue eyes, like me.
